A clear case for electoral reform

- Majority of Albertans reject Klein Tories, who take three quarters of Legislature seats
- MLA severance pay totals over $6 million for defeated and retiring MLAs
EDMONTON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) today responded to the Alberta election results by renewing its call for a citizens' assembly on electoral reform, and the abolition of the fat severance pay packages which Liberal and Tory MLAs voted themselves in 2001.
"Albertans voted for a Tory minority, not for a Legislature in which Tories have almost three quarters of the seats," stated CTF-Alberta director John Carpay.
"The wide spectrum of Alberta opinion, from Green to Alberta Alliance to Social Credit, is not represented in the Legislature. Albertans are once again not getting what they voted for," continued Carpay.
Taxpayers are on the hook for more than six million dollars to be paid out to retiring and defeated MLAs in severance pay, as follows:
